The European Union has spent €387,000 ($400,000) on a digital metaverse, which it intended to be a “shared digital space” where people could “reflect on global issues”. In mid-October, the Global Gateway metaverse was launched, with the aim of reaching out to 18-35 year olds “who identify as neutral about the EU and are not particularly engaged in political issues”. However, just six people attended the gala celebrating the launch. Commenters on Twitter criticised the decision to spend money on the project when it could have been used to help with a drought in East Africa or fund food for refugees.
