Powerful GOP Congresswoman Announces Surprise Retirement


Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) announced on Thursday that she will not be seeking re-election. McMorris Rodgers, who has represented Eastern Washington with distinction for nearly two decades, released a heartfelt statement marking the end of an era in her distinguished career in Congress.

McMorris Rodgers expressed her deep gratitude for the privilege of serving the people of Eastern Washington, referring to her tenure in Congress as the “honor and privilege of my life.”

“After much prayer and reflection, I’ve decided the time has come to serve them in new ways. I will not be running for re-election to the People’s House.”

McMorris Rodgers has been known for her conservative stance on various issues, including health care, the environment, and taxes. Throughout her tenure, she has held leadership positions within the Republican Party, including serving as the Chair of the House Republican Conference from 2013 to 2019, which made her the highest-ranking woman in the Republican congressional leadership at that time.

Her work often focuses on issues related to health care, veterans, and rural communities, reflecting the priorities of her Eastern Washington constituency.

“For years now, my team and I have lived and worked by our values of having fun while we SERVE — to Seek excellence, that Everybody matters, to Responsibly own it, practice Vigilant integrity, and Embrace change,” McMorris Rodgers stated.

As Chair of the Energy and Commerce Committee, McMorris Rodgers has been at the forefront of legislative efforts to improve American lives and ensure the nation’s future success.

McMorris Rodgers concluded her statement with a call for unity and prayer, reflecting on the power of faith and hope in overcoming division and healing the nation. “No matter the division, we must unite in prayer. And as we do, we will bring hope and healing to broken lives, broken families, and broken systems failing broken people.”

McMorris Rodgers adds to the growing list of Republicans in Congress not running for re-election.
