Comedian Amy Schumer broke her silence after several vicious days of being mocked following a recent interview where her face appeared visibly swollen, leaving viewers to wonder whether she was alright.
Wednesday’s spot on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” was meant to promote Schumer’s new show “Life & Beth,” released Friday on Hulu. However, it was her puffy cheeks that had online trolls comparing her to a Cabbage Patch doll.

Schumer followed up on her interview with several Instagram posts where she blamed the bloated look on an autoimmune disorder and clapped back at internet trolls over their insensitivity around women’s health.
“I have endometriosis an autoimmune disease that every woman should read about,” the 42-year-old wrote on her Instagram Thursday. “There are some medical and hormonal things going on in my world right now but I’m okay.”
“Thank you so much for everyone’s input about my face! I’ve enjoyed feedback and deliberation about my appearance as all women do for almost 20 years. And you’re right it is puffier than normal right now.”
She tried to turn the tables on her critics, declaring them ignorant about women’s health.
“Historically women’s bodies have barely been studied medically compared to men. The book “all in her head” does a good job explaining this. I also believe a woman doesn’t need any excuse for her physical appearance and owes no explanation,” she continued.
“But I wanted to take the opportunity to advocate for self love and acceptance of the skin you’re in,” Schumer said. “Like every other women/person some days I feel confident and good as hell and others I want to put a bag over my head.”
She ended the post by again plugging “Life & Beth,” starring Schumer and Michael Cera as an otherwise happy couple whose lives are shattered by a sudden incident.
“But I feel strong and beautiful and so proud of this tv show I created. Wrote. Starred in and directed. Maybe just maybe we can focus on that for a little,” Schumer wrote.
Schumer’s political views generally skew liberal, and her facade of female empowerment couched in bottomless wine glasses has provoked the scorn of conservatives who didn’t miss an opportunity to use her unflattering public appearance against her. During the 2016 presidential campaign, the comedian went on a tirade against then-candidate Donald Trump at a Tampa show, prompting hundreds of attendees to leave the audience. She used her pregnancy in 2018 to advocate for pro-choice candidates. In recent months even the left has turned on Schumer, who is Jewish, for posting criticism of Hamas after its October 7th attack and calling for the safe return of hundreds of hostages.
