The family of Brian Wilson initiated a conservatorship earlier this week, shedding new light on “The Beach Boys” legend’s health concerns. The legal document stated that the musician, who is 81, is battling a “major neurocognitive disorder (such as dementia).”
“Following the passing of Brian’s beloved wife Melinda, after careful consideration and consultation among Brian, his seven children, Gloria Ramos and Brian’s doctors (and consistent with family processes put in place by Brian and Melinda), we are confirming that longtime Wilson family representatives LeeAnn Hard and Jean Sievers will serve as Brian’s co-conservators of the person,” Wilson’s family shared with People magazine on Thursday.
“This decision was made to ensure that there will be no extreme changes to the household and Brian and the children living at home will be taken care of and remain in the home where they are cared for by Gloria Ramos and the wonderful team at the house who have been in place for many years helping take care of the family,” the statement read.
The documents indicate that Wilson would not be capable of attending a court hearing. “He is easily distracted, often even when aware of surroundings, and its purpose,” his doctor noted.
“Often makes spontaneous irrelevant or incoherent utterances. Has very short attention span and while unintentionally disruptive, is frequently unable to maintain decorum appropriate to the situation.” Additionally, his doctor mentioned that Wilson is on medication that slows the “progression of illness.”
Slate reported that Gloria Ramos holds the position of housekeeper for Wilson. The family of Wilson further noted that the iconic musician retains the ability to “enjoy all of his family and friends and continue to work on current projects as well as participate in any activities he chooses.”
Wilson’s team highlighted that he is “unable to properly provide for his or her personal needs for physical health, food, clothing, or shelter.”
On January 30th, Wilson, the legendary co-founder of the Beach Boys, announced the tragic passing of his wife, Melinda Ledbetter Wilson. The couple had been married for 28 years. “My heart is broken. Melinda, my beloved wife of 28 years, passed away this morning. Our five children and I are just in tears,” he wrote.
“She gave me the emotional security I needed to have a career,” Brian wrote. “She encouraged me to make the music that was closest to my heart.”
Wilson is best known for being a co-founder, the leader, and the principal songwriter of The Beach Boys.
