The Long Valley Middle School in New Jersey has replaced its rainbow-themed “safe zone” signs with signs featuring the school’s mascot. The rainbow signs were put up in 2019 and were taken down after some parents complained that the signs could be interpreted as favoritism toward a certain group of students. The school district received legal advice to remove the signs. Ed Vitagliano, executive vice president of the American Family Association, praised the school district for changing the signs to be more inclusive to all students. The new signs feature the school’s mascot, the panther, as part of a new initiative called “Profile of a Panther”. The change is intended to encourage kindness towards all students.
