Ron DeSantis Says Trump Should Have Given Up Power Like George Washington After 2020 Election

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is leveling his most pointed accusations against Donald Trump for disputing the results of the 2020 presidential election.

DeSantis took the former president to task for challenging the election results in a new interview with Piers Morgan, which will air in full on Thursday night.

The potential 2024 presidential rival to Donald Trump invoked a historical analogy to Founding Father George Washington to draw an alleged contrast with Trump.

“So, somebody who really set the standard is George Washington because he always put the Republic over his own personal interest. When we won the American Revolution, Washington surrendered his sword,” DeSantis said.

DeSantis cited King George III’s apocryphal praise of Washington for declining calls for him to remain president.

“George III said, ‘he’s the greatest man in the world, if he gives up power.’ I think the person is more about how you handle your public duties and the kind of character you bring to that endeavor,” he said.

Beyond the dispute about whether the tyrannical English king had actually uttered the phrase, Donald Trump conceded that he would not be president on January 7, one day after the most chaotic Electoral College session in United States history.

Furthermore, it is documented that Trump told his supporters to “peacefully and patriotically make their voices heard” at his speech ahead of the riot on January 6, which had been planned in advance by extremist groups. Donald Trump would later tell his supporters to “go home.”

DeSantis criticized Trump’s character and leadership skills by continuing to invoke the nation’s Founding Fathers.

“You really want to look to people like our Founding Fathers, like what type of character, it’s not saying that you don’t ever make a mistake in your personal life, but I think what type of character are you bringing?” DeSantis said.

DeSantis further criticized the “daily drama” of the Trump White House. He reiterated his Monday comment he didn’t know “what goes into paying hush money to a porn star to secure silence over some type of alleged affair.”

DeSantis criticized the prosecutors threatening to indict Trump as “weaponizing the justice system.” However, the Florida governor has declined to get involved in the legal matter, which is being deliberated upon by a grand jury set to reconvene on Thursday.

When asked about the nicknames the Donald Trump has given him, the Yale graduate claimed not to know how to spell “DeSanctimonious.”

“I don’t know how to spell DeSanctimonious. I don’t really know what it means but I kind of like it.”

Morgan’s full interview with DeSantis is set to air on Thursday night at 8 pm.
